Described by Time Out magazine as ‘The World’s most popular audiovisual artists’ and as 'next level shit!' by Grandmaster Flash, when they supported the great man in San Francisco, audio/visual breakbeat duo Addictive TV are back at ADE 2008 with a live show, a special talk on all thing audio and video, and a month long exhibition of their remix work at Concrete Image on Spuistraat. We phoned the dynamic duo Graham and Tolly in the studio, where they're currently working on a new film remix project for 20th Century Fox.ADDICTIVE TV
"We actually remix all kinds of things, not just movies" explains Graham, "But that gets most focus because it’s still unusual. I think the Hollywood studios come to us to make viral remixes because they like our creative style and our remixes reach parts of the web that traditional trailers can’t; cropping up on blogs and sites that would never ever carry a normal film trailer."
The trail-blazing producer/artists from London are renowned for their fast-paced movie remixes, rad video mash-ups and kick-ass live shows that has seen them play in over 40 countries now! And in fact Addictive TV have now twice been crowned #1 VJs in the World in DJ Magazine, who run the poll alongside the top 100 DJs, and they've also twice come second. The duo have supported the likes the Stereo MC's, Chemical Brothers, Kraftwerk star Karl Bartos, and even Moby described them as 'a tough act to follow' when they supported him earlier this year at the opening event of music festival SXSW 2008 in Texas, which isn't surprising, as the American music magazine Paste said in their review of that gig "Addictive TV completely blew my mind!" describing the show as "a compelling pop culture audio/visual avalanche!". Not bad for an unsigned act!
"Our shows are not just movie remixes though!!" laughs Tolly "We mash-up everything from Eminem with Edith Piaf, Elvis Presley with The Streets, even Laurel & Hardy remixed into breakbeat-ska, and recently we made a bootleg drum’n’bass remix of Led Zep’s Black Dog, which became a favourite on DJ Zebra's Virgin Radio show in France."
But it’s their film remixes that seems to have brought them most attention, and is one of the many cool things that makes Addictive TV unique. In 2006 they became the first group ever to officially remix a Hollywood movie, creating the award winning web viral for the Antonio Banderas film Take The Lead. After that the big studios came calling and films remixed into AV dance tracks have included Samuel L Jackson's Snakes On a Plane, this year’s Iron Man blockbuster, and most recently Max Payne for 20th Century Fox. But in 2008 came the strangest remix request of all…
”Yeah, we actually remixed the Olympics live for TV, that was a crazy but amazing project” says Graham “We mixed music and IOC archive footage, that we’d cut into breakbeat loops, with the live feeds; creating a totally alternative and trippy way to watch the Olympics! Hopefully we’ll get asked to do it again for London 2012, or maybe the Worldcup 2010, that’d be cool…!”
“But you could take what we do in loads of directions” adds Tolly “Remixing back catalogue archive footage would be fantastic, giving old songs and artists new life. That’s something we really want to do more over the next couple of years”.
Catch Addictive TV live when they launch their High Five exhibition at Concrete Image on Saturday 25th October and if you want to hear and see more about their work, their ADE talk “Everything from A to V” is at the Felix Meritis on Saturday afternoon at 1pm.
